A Clinical Study of Ankle Fractures


Abstract
Fifty four cases of the ankle fracture that were treated in the Department of Orthopedic urggery, Jeonbug Medical School Hospital, from January 1973 to October 1978 were analyzed !inically and the summary of the results were as follows :
1. Of 54 cases, 40 cases were males and 14 females. The average age of toe patients was 31.
2. The causes of the ankle fractures were mostly due to traffic accident (44.4%), sliding down and falling from a height (31.5%), and industrial accident (11.1%).
3. Occupation were 15 technicians, 11 manuals, 10 clericals, 5 students, and 4 drivers. 4.. By the classification, supination-external rotation and pronation-external rotation types were about two thirds of all cases.
5. Open reduction was performed in 31 cases, and closed reduction was in 23 cases.
6. The average duration of cast immobilization after the closed reduction was 8.7 weeks, and that of the open reduction was 6.4 weeks.
7. The result of the treatment was better in cases of the open reduction than those of the closed reduction.
8. The good clinical results could be achieved by obtaining the anatomical reduction of the talus in the mortise, that was achieved more satisfactorilly by ;perative method.
